Memberships
Recurring memberships
How renewals, failed payments and cancellations work for memberships billed monthly, every six months or yearly.
How renewals work
When someone joins a recurring membership, they pay for the first period and their card is saved for the renewals. At the end of each period — a month, six months or a year after they joined — we charge that card again automatically, and the payment lands in your balance like any other sale.
Every payment carries the same processing fee as a ticket: 5% + €0.50, on the first payment and on each renewal. Nothing is charged to you when a renewal fails.
To sell a recurring membership you need payouts set up. If your payouts stop working, renewals can't be paid to you: we keep retrying them on the schedule below, and if payouts still aren't fixed by the last retry, those memberships end. Keep your Stripe details up to date.
Memberships that need approval
If a membership requires your approval, the first payment is only reserved when someone requests to join. It's charged when you approve them, and their first period starts then. If you decline, or don't decide within 7 days, the reservation is released and they aren't charged.
When a renewal fails
Cards expire, get replaced or are declined, and sometimes a bank asks the member to confirm the payment. When a renewal doesn't go through:
- The member keeps access while we retry.
- We retry automatically 1, 3 and 7 days later, and email the member each time with a link to pay straight away, with the same card or a different one.
- If the last retry fails, about 11 days after the renewal date, the membership ends and we let the member know. They can join again any time.
You don't need to chase anyone — the emails and retries are handled for you.
Cancellations
Members can cancel at any time from Settings → My Memberships. They keep access until the end of the period they've paid for, and they aren't charged again.
You can cancel a member's subscription from your membership's member list with Cancel Subscription:
- Cancel immediately — access ends now and nothing more is charged.
- Cancel at end of billing period — the member keeps access until the period they've paid for ends.
Either way you can also refund the last payment. The refund comes out of your balance, and the processing fee isn't returned.
Removing a membership from your page hides it from new members, but existing members keep renewing until they cancel or you cancel them.
