Garmin's new developer program tiers: what they mean for your Garmin integration
Garmin has reopened the [Garmin Connect Developer Program](https://developer.garmin.com/gc-developer-program/overview/) to new applications, after pausing them earlier in 2026. It is no longer one programme with one level of access. There are now three tiers: **Personal**, **Starter** and **Enterprise**. For anyone building on fitness data, this is the biggest change to Garmin's API in years. Below is what Garmin has published, what has only been reported so far, and how to decide whether to apply to Garmin directly or go through a platform that already holds access. [See the Garmin integration →](https://platform.stridee.com/integrations/garmin) ## The three tiers, as Garmin describes them This is from Garmin's own [program overview](https://developer.garmin.com/gc-developer-program/overview/): | | Personal | Starter | Enterprise | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Who it is for | Individuals using their own Garmin Connect data | Apps applying for Starter Access | "Companies operating at scale requiring capabilities beyond Starter Access" | | How you get it | Generate a personal API token in Garmin Connect | Apply through Garmin's form | Request through the developer portal | | Activity (JSON and FIT), Health, Women's Health | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Training and Courses (push workouts and routes) | No | Yes | Yes | | Golf | No | No | Yes | | Delivery | Pull | Push | Push, or ping/pull | | Historical data | Not stated | Not included | 1 month + | | User capacity | Not stated | Limited | Unlimited | | Technical support | Not stated | Not stated | Included | | Price | Not stated | Not stated | "Commercial terms are tailored based on business and technical requirements" | Connect IQ, the SDK for apps that run on the watch, is a separate programme and is not part of this change. ## What has been reported but not published Garmin's page gives no prices, no user numbers and no dates. [DC Rainmaker's write-up](https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2026/10/garmin-connect-api-revamps-connect-developer.html), based on his conversations with Garmin, adds detail that Garmin has not put on its site: - Starter covers up to **1,000 users**. - Enterprise has a one-time entry fee of about **$1,000**, credited against usage, then billing **per active monthly user** at a rate agreed with each company. - Billing starts on **1 April 2027**, and existing partners move to Enterprise without the entry fee. Treat these as reported, not confirmed. Check with Garmin before you build a budget on them. ## What this means Overall this is good news. A solo developer who wants their own data can generate a token in Garmin Connect instead of waiting for a review. A small team can apply for Starter, which includes workout and route push. Larger partners have a dedicated tier with support and history. The part to plan around is the boundary between Starter and Enterprise. Three things are clear from Garmin's own page: 1. **Starter is "Limited".** Garmin has not published the limit, but there is one, and a product that is working will reach it. 2. **Enterprise terms are not published.** They are "tailored", so you will not know what Garmin access costs at scale until you are negotiating it. 3. **Starter has no historical data.** A new user who connects sees only what they record from then on. None of this is a criticism of Garmin. Running an API costs money, and Garmin is entitled to set terms for access at scale. Still, if you are building a business on Garmin data, plan for the move from Starter to Enterprise from the start. ## The question most teams should be asking **If you only need Garmin and you will stay within Starter's limits, apply for Starter.** That is our honest advice, even though we sell an alternative. Few products stay in that position for long, though. The cases that change the answer are these: ### You need more than one brand Your users do not all wear Garmin. The ones on COROS, Polar, Wahoo, Suunto, WHOOP or an Apple Watch expect the same "connect your device" button. Each of those brands runs its own developer programme, with its own application, agreement, OAuth flow and data format. Apple Health has no web API at all: you have to ship an iOS app to read it. Garmin's new tiers make one of those integrations easier. You still have to build the rest. ### You will outgrow Starter Leaving Starter means moving to Enterprise terms that Garmin tailors company by company, at the point your product starts working. If you plan to grow, plan for that conversation early. ### You need history Starter has no historical data, and Garmin lists Enterprise history as "1 month +". For a coaching or analytics product, a new user who connects and sees an empty dashboard is the point where many of them leave. ### You do not want to maintain it Approval is the easy part. After that you handle OAuth, token refresh, webhook retries, FIT file parsing, the encoder from your workout model to Garmin's step format, and every change Garmin makes to its API. Multiply that by each brand you support. ## Why Stridee [Stridee Platform](https://platform.stridee.com) is one API for sports-watch and health data. Every provider below is already approved, built and maintained by us. **One integration, ten sources.** Garmin, COROS, Polar, Wahoo, Suunto, WHOOP, Zepp (Amazfit), Hammerhead, Fitbit and Apple Health. You implement one `POST /v1/connect` and one webhook handler, and every brand arrives in the same format. **No approvals to chase.** There is no developer application for you to file with each brand and no iOS app to ship for Apple Health. Your users still consent on each brand's own screen, as they should, but no developer application stands between you and launch. **Published prices, one subscription.** The plans are 39 €, 99 € and 249 € a month (two months free when billed yearly) for 100, 500 and 1,500 connected users. One subscription covers every provider. If a brand changes how it charges partners, absorbing that is our job, not a contract you renegotiate. **On every plan:** - **History.** When the athlete allows it on Garmin's consent screen, past activities are replayed going back up to five years. - **Workout push** to Garmin, COROS, Wahoo, Suunto and Apple Watch with one call, `POST /v1/workouts`. - **Route push** to Garmin with `POST /v1/routes`. - **Wellness data**: sleep, HRV, stress, Body Battery, resting heart rate, VO₂max and more, each as its own event. **A 14-day free trial**, with nothing charged until it ends. What we do not offer: the Golf API, Women's Health data, and laps and streams parsed into JSON (today they are inside the FIT file). [Provider support & limits](https://platform.stridee.com/docs/providers) lists exactly what is live, generated from the same constants the API enforces. ## Garmin direct or a platform? | | Garmin Starter | Garmin Enterprise | Stridee | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Price | Not published | Tailored per company | 39–249 € a month, published | | User capacity | Limited | Unlimited | 100, 500 or 1,500 included by plan | | Brands | Garmin | Garmin | Ten, including Garmin and Apple Health | | Workout push | Garmin | Garmin | Garmin, COROS, Wahoo, Suunto, Apple Watch | | Historical data | Not included | 1 month + | Up to five years | | Your engineering | OAuth, webhooks, FIT, encoders | Same | One API | Garmin figures are from Garmin's [program overview](https://developer.garmin.com/gc-developer-program/overview/) as of 21 October 2026. Go to Garmin directly when Garmin is the only brand you will support and Starter's limits fit, or when you are big enough to want a direct Enterprise contract and a support line. Choose Stridee when your users wear more than one brand, when you would rather spend engineering time on your product than on integrations, or when you want to know what device data costs before you sign anything. ## Two things that apply on either route - **Users have to consent.** Every athlete approves the connection on the brand's own screen and chooses what to share. - **Garmin's attribution rules follow the data.** Garmin's [API Brand Guidelines](https://developer.garmin.com/downloads/brand/Garmin-Developer-API-Brand-Guidelines.pdf) require you to credit Garmin wherever its data appears, including when it reached you through someone else's API. ## Start building The [quickstart](https://platform.stridee.com/docs/quickstart) takes about fifteen minutes and needs no public URL, because the CLI forwards real deliveries to localhost. - [Garmin integration](https://platform.stridee.com/integrations/garmin) - [How to integrate Garmin data into your app](https://stridee.com/blog/how-to-integrate-garmin-api) - [How to send workouts to a Garmin watch](https://stridee.com/blog/push-workouts-to-garmin-watch) - [Pricing](https://platform.stridee.com/pricing) - [Stridee vs Terra](https://platform.stridee.com/compare/terra-api)
